Career Development Events

List of all CDE competitions in California

Career Development Events, or CDEs for short, are competitions based on agriculture career skills. Students and advisors form teams and practice in order to compete at various field days throughout the state. A State Finals competition is held for each contest, the winners of most move on to compete at the National FFA Convention in October! CDEs are also commonly referred to as "Judging" teams, as many of the contests involve judging something agriculturally related. These teams are focused on developing students' skills that can be transferred directly to an agriculture career.

Agricultural Fabrication

Students compete to build a project in a certain time frame. Each contest is unique in its design, and the product students build. Students set up a work site, bring tools, develop a project that meets the guidelines, and work as a team to get it completed. Projects are judged on completeness, work quality, difficulty, and students are judged on safety and an interview.

Agricultural Sales

The Agricultural Sales contest is one of the premier hands on CDE events offered in the FFA. The contest involves a team of 3-4 members assuming the roles of sales representatives of the company chosen each year by the State Association. During the contest members participate in a team sales pitch as well as one on one sales conferences. Judges assume the role of perspective buyers of the product, and it is the job of the competitor to convince the judge to make a purchase!

This team is new in 24/25, be on the look out for more info!

Best Informed Greenhand (B.I.G.)

The objective of the Best Informed Greenhand contest is to understand the aims, purposes, history, and structure of the Local, State, and National FFA student organizations and know the opportunities it makes available as referenced in the current National FFA Manual and State Constitution.

Only Greenhand FFA members are allowed to compete in the contest, which consists of completing 4, 50 question tests on FFA knowledge and History. Multiple Choice, T/F, Matching, and Fill in the Blank tests are utilized.
